Beauty is no longer skin deep; the concept of beauty is widening out to cover not only appearance, but also mental well-being and physical health. Imogen Matthews, consultant to IN-COSMETICS, the leading exhibition and conference for the cosmetics, toiletries and personal care industry, finds out more about the recent well-being trend which is impacting on all areas of the market. It seems that most consumer markets are latching onto the concept of well-being, and none more so than cosmetics and toiletries. In Datamonitor's* recent report entitled Future Innovations in Personal Care, changing lifestyles and consumer attitudes are said to be expanding the concept of beauty to include emotional considerations, creating new product opportunities for manufacturers and service providers and driving the growth of alternative treatments such as aromatherapy.
Rhod Jones of Datamonitor comments: "Beauty isn't just topical any more but comes from within. Consumers are starting to appreciate the link with health and diet and the retailers are picking up on this trend." He cites the example of The Body Shop which has moved to more of a "total well-being" positioning. The Body Shop launched a therapeutic range called Ayurveda in 2000 and claimed to be the first major retailer to make the Ayurveda concept accessible to the mass market. The idea is that people take a more holistic approach in caring for their skin -what is put in is as important as what is put on.

"However, they may need some persuasion to take pills marketed by a brand known for its skincare. One way round the problem is to say that the beauty supplements are 'natural'".
A final point on well-being is the growing trend of "cross-over" between the food/beverage and non food markets. Jago comments: "This is evident in Japan, in particular, where there are a number of 'beauty' beverages which fall within the broad definition of functional foods. These typically contain combinations of vitamins and minerals with other ingredients including green tea, aloe, royal jelly and collagen.
