There's a "gulfarium" and museum at Fort Walton Beach. Panama City Beach has Gulfworld and several amusement facilities.
There is a city beach right down town, with a many pubs and restaurants right on the beach. If you don't want to bring beer or have the kids exposed to people drinking on the beach, head just a few miles east and go to Gulf State Park. Beautiful beaches, white sand, no drinking! Plenty of covered space for the heat. Wide beaches, not very populated. Just gorgeous.
You can make daytrips to Fairhope, Alabama, about 35 minutes north. It's a lovely, upscale, artsy village with dozens of neat shops and restaurants. It's right on Mobile Bay. Has a great pier you can fish from. Walk around, enjoy the day.

There are less than 5 hour drive beautiful beaches on the lakes near Atlanta as well: Lake Sidney Lanier - Water Skiing, fishing, swimming, camping and much more. This lake is over 30 miles long and is one of Atlanta's most popular boating lakes. Numerous coves and islands are located all over the lake. There are 34 public recreation areas on this lake of 525 miles of shoreline. Just north of Columbus off I-85. Want to bask in the summer sun? Then try Robin Lake Beach, the largest, inland, man-made white sand beach in the world. Only an hour away from Hotlanta, the beach rests along a 50-acre lake and is much more than just sand. For the kids there's the Children's Center, which features a large outdoor playground, miniature golf and the very cool Chickadee Choo Choo miniature train. (Sorry, it's just for the kids.) But for the adults, there are bikes available for rent, walking trails to enjoy and, during the summer, there's even a circus performed on the beach. Most importantly, Robin Lake Beach is a great place to kick back and relax.

Less than 45 minutes northeast of downtown Atlanta, Lake Lanier Islands is a beach and water park that utilizes the wonderful Lake Lanier. A half-mile-long white sand beach is great for relaxing in the sun, but that's just the beginning of the fun to be had here. There are also 10 waterslides, sail and paddleboats and a wave pool to enjoy. The Kiddy Lagoon is where the younger set can spend their day at the beach while parents decide between all the activities. Some of those activities include hiking, fishing and miniature golf, so the choice might not be as easy as you think.

Located on the shores of Lake Walter F. George, this park is a great place for fishermen and boating enthusiasts. In May, bass fishing tournaments are held on the 48,000-acre lake, so you can get plenty of practice in during the year. When you're not looking for the next big catch, you may catch a glimpse of wildlife along the three-mile nature trail. Just make sure that if you make any new friends along the trail that they do not follow you to the picnic shelter and try to take your food. There is also an 18-hole golf course, a swimming beach and tennis courts, so there is no reason you shouldn't have a great time here. Also, if you want to spend the night, there are several places to choose from.

With the largest sand beach of any Georgia State Park, John Tanner Park is great for water lovers. In addition to the beach, there are two lakes for swimming, boating and fishing. Of course, there is more to do than get wet on the park’s 136 acres. There are plenty of picnic areas, a miniature golf course, a walking and nature trail, and a volleyball court to enjoy during your visit. There is a small lodge near the beach, so if you have the time, you may want to make plans to stay longer than a few hours. There are certainly enough activities available to necessitate an overnight visit.
